                            Vessel Rims Saraguro Area
various vessel rims Most sherds of the highland Saraguro region usually are rather thick (sherds 9, 10 and 28 are among the exceptions) and plain and are probably the remains of utilitarian wares. They are often sand or mica tempered, and sometimes have a fugitive red slip. Occasionally there is a simple red banding overlapping the rim area, with a greater band width on the exterior side. More complex decorative patterns, painted or plastic, are very rare; most examples we have encountered are illustrated below.

Following is a listing of sherds in the figure giving the source site and the rim diameter in centimeters. 1-Pz-30, 2-Lla-34, 3-GP-36, 4-h-28, 5-Y-26, 6-Y-28, 7-GP-22, 8-Y-26, 9-U-23, 10-U-26, 11-Y-20, 12-Y-38, 13-Y-38, 14-Pz-15, 15-Pz-22, 16-HU-33, 17-C-32, 18-Sa-42, 19-Sa-31, 20-T-30, 21-T-?, 22-Pz-16, 23-T-28, 24-Y-24, 25-Y-22, 26-M-25, 27-Y-42, 28-U-17, 29-Y-28, 30-Y-28, 31-HU-30, 32-PZ-14, 33-Lla-30, 34-Y-26, 35-Y-16, 36-Y-24, 37-Y-22, 38-Y-16, 39-GU-30, 40-GU-42, 41-GU-14, 42-GU-25, 43-h-15, 44-h-15.

      Torre Loma (TL) Decorated Sherds
Torre Loma decorated sherds As mentioned above, sherds of the highland Saraguro region are rarely decorated to any degree. As small as this sample of painted decorated (red-on-buff) sherds from Torre Loma is, it makes up a large proportion of painted decoration we have seen on sherds of the area.

Sherds 1 & 2 have decoration on their exteriors just below the narrowest part of the vessel necks; diameters of the inside of the necks are 16cm. and 15cm. Sherd 3 is a rim sherd with decoration on the exterior; its diameter is unknown. Sherd 7 is the profile of a rim sherd with a mouth diameter of 18. It is one of the only examples we have seen in the highland Saraguro region of punctate decoration; it has a row of punctate on the exterior of the thickened part of the rim.

                Vessel Bases various vessel bases

Annular/pedestal bases (often with perforation) and polypod bases are very common in the area. This sample illustrates most of the major types encountered. . . .

          Bridge and Spout Vessel
bridge and spout vessel

This is the only evidence we have seen of the presence of bridge and spout vessels in the region. It has a heavily eroded red slipped surface. The resident of Tenta who showed it to us told us he had found it near that small village.
