These illustrations by Luis Antonio Lozano Quizhpe of Saraguro
are divided (by us) into two sets: Traditional Saraguro, and
Contemporary [postmodern?] Saraguro. One drawing
shown here, "Courtship in the cerro (mountains)," appears with
the title, "Enamoramiento" as Fig. 45 on page 160 in the book
LOS SARAGUROS: FIESTA Y RITUALIDAD . Most of the other
illustrations in the book were also created by Luis Antonio Lozano.
The book was published in
Quito by Abya-Yala and authored by six Saraguro scholars
(Luis Aurelio Chalán Guamán, Angel Polivio
Chalán
Lozano, Segundo Luis Francisco Quizhpe Quizhpe, Manuel Santos
Guamán Guamán, Segundo Francisco Saca Quizhpe and
Mateo Guamán Zhunaula) and
compiled by us. Linda asked Luis Antonio if he could also create some additional
drawings, including several that reflected the reality of Saraguro
life in the 1990s. He could and did, and some of the results are
shown below.
